Domestic violence is an epidemic: one in three women worldwide will be a victim of domestic abuse in her lifetime. It does not discriminate and it can affect anyone, regardless of income, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or religion.
What’s more, domestic violence has historically been a taboo subject, but in 2004, the Avon Foundation for Women set out to change that, launching the Avon Speak Out Against Domestic Violence program. Speak Out builds awareness, educates, and develops and implements prevention and direct service programs. Some of these projects are global, focused on ending gender-based violence and strengthening domestic violence laws.
Avon and the Avon Foundation for Women have contributed nearly $60 million globally to support these goals, which includes nearly $40 million dedicated to U.S. programs. In 2015 alone, the Avon Foundation’s Speak Out program funded 86 grants aimed at ending domestic violence or supporting survivors in 26 states and Puerto Rico, totaling $2.8 million.
The Avon Foundation currently funds domestic violence programs in four core areas:
In 2014 the Avon Foundation funded the NO MÁS national survey in partnership with NO MORE, a national campaign led by a coalition of advocacy groups, service providers, the U.S. Department of Justice, major corporations, and thousands of individuals, to raise public awareness and engage bystanders around domestic violence and sexual assault.
The NO MÁS Study, the most comprehensive study of domestic violence and sexual assault in the U.S. Latin@ community to date, was released by the Avon Foundation at a Congressional Briefing in April 2015. The findings demonstrated an urgent need for increased awareness, conversation, and education around domestic violence and sexual assault, with an emphasis on what bystanders can do to prevent violence and help victims.
To meet the need for increased awareness and education, the Avon Foundation announced $1.5 million in grants at the end of 2015 to support domestic violence organizations serving the Latin@ community in the U.S.
Avon Regional Domestic Violence Grants Program
This Avon-signature program supports domestic violence agencies across the U.S. and Puerto Rico with small general operating grants for direct-service and life-saving support programs in communities and regions where Avon has business locations. The Avon Foundation awarded 44 grants totaling $500,000 in 2015.
Campus Sexual Assault Prevention Programs
The Avon Foundation provided significant new funding in 2015 to Futures Without Violence, continuing its support for The National Leadership Institute: Changing the Narrative on Campus Gender-Based Violence, a national, action-oriented training curriculum on trauma-informed best-practices for preventing and responding to gender-based violence on college campuses across the U.S. The Avon Foundation also partnered with Futures Without Violence to create The Hunting Ground Action Toolkit, which provides resources to inspire and accelerate change on college campuses nationwide.
In addition, the Avon Foundation provided $250,000 in 2015 for 25 new grants for Campus Sexual Assault Peer Education Programs. The programs focus on peer-led bystander training aimed at reducing campus sexual assault, dating abuse and stalking.
The Global Partnership to End Violence Against Women and The Justice Institute on Gender-Based Violence
The Global Partnership to End Violence Against Women, launched in Washington, DC in March 2010, is a public-private collaboration of the U.S. Department of State, Vital Voices Global Partnership, Avon and the Avon Foundation for Women.
In 2014, the Avon Foundation announced additional funding for a new Global Partnership initiative, The Justice Institute on Gender-Based Violence. Each “Institute” is a multi-day interactive training program, bringing together those who work closely with domestic violence victims: judges, court officers, prosecutors, police officers, and representatives of government agencies and non-governmental organizations. The goal of each Institute is to improve victim protection efforts and the criminal justice response to domestic violence through a trauma-informed approach.
In 2014 and 2015, Justice Institutes were convened in Brazil, India, Mexico, Nepal and South Africa. To celebrate International Women’s Day in March 2016, the Avon Foundation announced a new $500,000 grant to Vital Voices to expand the Justice Institute initiative in five countries in 2016: Argentina, Colombia, India, Philippines and South Africa.

My Avon Story
I decided to become and Avon Representative in 2014. My daughter had signed up and my sister-in-law had as well. My sister-in-law joined for the discount on her own purchases and my daughter gave it up after a while, she found she didn’t have the time she wanted to devote to it with two toddlers.
I had always thought about becoming an Avon Rep, but it was always just a thought. I remember my mom buying Avon when I was very young and was always mesmerized at all the products and how the Avon lady always looked so beautiful and polished.
My daughter was on our friend Leslie Reid’s team in Texarkana, TX. We were friends on Facebook and I was always ordering from her; she had some great deals! One day she posted about joining her team and becoming an Avon Rep; I just decided right then and there to do it.
For the remainder of that first year I concentrated on learning as much as I could about the business; learning most everything on my own. Then in 2015 I devoted every extra dollar and minute I had to my Avon Business. I grew my customer base slowly but surely and over time my customer base and sales consistently increased. I even started my leadership journey at the encouragement of Emily Seagren who was Leslie’s upline.
I studied and learned everything I could from Emily and through hers and Leslie’s mentorship I am where I am today. My goal is to have 100 active representatives on my national team and to earn “Leader” and “Honor Society” statuses by the end of 2016. My ultimate goal is to retire and Avon be my major source of income.
