Memories of my Avon 39 Walk in Chicago Part I
My Avon 39 story begins in January of this year. My husband Buddy and I drove out to Arizona to meet up with Emily Seagren and her husband Rob for a night out. Emily is my Upline/Mentor with Avon and has become a great friend of mine. Emily approached me about joining her in Chicago for the Avon 39 walk taking place June 3-4. She was very persuasive and I committed to join her. I had no idea what I was getting myself into.
Once back home I went to the Avon 39 website and registered for the walk. I decided that I would fly into Chicago a few days early to spend time with Emily seeing the sites and City. Flights and hotel were arranged and I was set!
Next was the task of raising the $1800 required for the walk. This was probably my toughest task but I had several months to complete it. 16 weeks prior to the walk the training began. I did not train as I should have and I paid for it during the walk for sure!
I flew into Chicago on Wednesday, May 31st. Emily, with her kids in tow, picked me up at the airport. We headed to the hotel to check in and relax before our Chicago adventures the following day. I was excited to get a photo of the CFD truck on our way, me having been a firefighter for several years.
We headed out for our hop-on-hop-off double decker bus tour of the City. The City was amazing! The architecture alone was worth the visit. Seeing Lake Michigan was pretty cool as well. I had seen it when I was 13 on our way to DC on a family vacation but really couldn’t remember it.
Our first stop was Navy Pier. It was so beautiful here; the river, the shops, the food! We took advantage of several photo ops, had some Chicago hot dogs, I bought some Garrett’s popcorn and then we went over to the fountains at Josh’s request!
After the Navy Pier we got an Uber ride to the Art Institute of Chicago. I have a love for art and couldn’t wait to see me some Monet. I was surprised how excited Josh and Ava were to go the museum as well; not very many children appreciate art. They loved it! My only complaint was the museum wouldn’t let me take my popcorn in or check it so I had to throw it out. I tried to hide it outside but someone found it! The paintings were so beautiful! They even had a type of art I had never seen before; miniature rooms/homes. It was fascinating how they were made completely by hand, every piece.
After a long day of site-seeing we headed to Pizzeria Due (pronounced Dewey) original Chicago Pizzeria and Emily had a couple of ladies she knew joining us; her niece and an old friend. They were both quite lovely, very down to earth and it was a pleasure to meet them. I had never had Chicago style pizza and was rather skeptical because it looks strange with the sauce on top. It also takes about 50 minutes to cook. I have to say it was YUMMY!! The crust is completely different, almost pastry like. The sauce was very good, more like a salsa. I was so glad I had the opportunity to try it; hands down the best pizza I ever had.
Friday morning we were all ready to head to Willis Tower (formerly Sear’s Tower); a 108-story, 1,450-foot skyscraper. It is the second-tallest building in the United States and the 16th-tallest in the world. We grabbed an Uber ride and headed out.
The Willis Tower observation deck, called the Skydeck, is located on the 103rd floor of the tower. It is 1,353 feet high and is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Chicago. You can experience how the building sways on a windy day. You can see far over the plains of Illinois and across Lake Michigan to Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin on a clear day. The elevator took us to the top in about 60 seconds and you could feel the pressure change as you rose up. The views were spectacular!
After a few photos we immediately went to get in line for “The Ledge”; a retractable glass balcony. I was surprised that this was included in the price of admission! While in line it was fun to see the fear in so many ahead of us. One man wouldn’t even get out on it, another was shaking as he did. None of us were scared at all; it was great!
Our last stop of the day before heading to our Avon 39 Host Hotel was Millennial Park and Cloud Gate; a public sculpture by Indian-born British artist Anish Kapoor. The sculpture is nicknamed “The Bean” because of its shape. It is made up of 168 stainless steel plates welded together; its highly polished exterior has no visible seams. It measures 33 by 66 by 42 feet. You can actually walk under and through it; it is quite beautiful.
We then headed to the Avon 39 host hotel, the Chicago Westin O’Hare, so we could get registered and settled in for the walk in the morning. Once that was all done we met up with Emily’s husband Rob for dinner and so he could pick the kids up. We had a great dinner at the Ram Restaurant and Brewhouse. I had some fried cheese curds for the 1st time which I will never pass up again! For my dinner I had the Beer Cheese and Ham soup and a Caesar salad.
Tomorrow will be the Avon 39 Walk which was the reason I was in Chicago after all. Emily and I tried to get to sleep early but I think it was maybe 11 or later before we did. Not sure if it was excitement or nerves! After all, we would be walking over 39 miles in the next two days!

About Avon Representative Shirl Papaian
Shirl was awarded on stage at the 2015 Avon PRP Gala Luncheon for the highest online sales in her district, for earning President’s Club Level and other various incentives.
In 2016 she advanced from Ambassador to Silver Ambassador and to Gold Ambassador through her consistent efforts to grow and mentor her team of Avon Representatives. She also became a DSWA Certified ELITE Leader and completed the Avon Pilot Coaching Program.
Shirl also earned almost $2,000 in Avon bonuses in the “Journey to Gold Incentive” and earned herself a Champion Blender by being #59 out of 400 Avon Ambassadors in the “Ignite Your Avon Torch” incentive. She also won all three awards in the “One Team, One Dream” incentive. Shirl’s 2016 team sales were more than $92,000. Her Team’s sales growth was 365%.
Shirl was awarded on stage at the Annual PC Gala Luncheon for 2016 for #1 in her District for Sales Growth, #4 in Sales Volume, #2 in online sales and earning Honor Society Level. She also was honored with the prestigious Spirit of Avon Award.

My Avon Story
I am born and raised in Southern California. I grew up in Anaheim, CA, spent 13 years in mountains of Idyllwild and then eventually moved to the Hemet/San Jacinto Valley where I now reside. I began working at the age of 15 but I have actually only had a handful of jobs in my lifetime; Fast food manager, extruder operator, restaurant owner, fire fighter and now district manager for a private fire prevention company and media/ marketing for an off road racing company. I also own a home based computer service/repair company and an off road media/marketing company. I hold an AS degree in Fire Science from Mt San Jacinto College where I graduated with honors of distinction.
I decided to become an Avon Representative in 2014. My daughter had signed up and my sister-in-law as well. My sister-in-law joined for the discount on her own purchases and my daughter gave it up after a while; she found she didn’t have the time she wanted to devote to it while raising two toddlers.
I had always thought about becoming an Avon Rep, but it was always just a thought. I remember my mom buying Avon when I was very young and was always mesmerized at all the products and how the Avon lady always looked so beautiful and polished. Of course I loved the lipstick bullets!
My daughter’s upline and mutual friend, Leslie Reid, was always sharing Avon deals and the opportunity on Facebook. One day she posted about joining her team and becoming an Avon Rep; I just decided right then and there to do it. I had no plan or specific reason. As I started selling, I realized that I was actually having fun and felt accomplished at how well I was doing. I decided I wanted to get serious and actually be successful!
For the remainder of that first year I concentrated on learning as much as I could about the business; learning most everything on my own. Then in 2015 I devoted every extra dollar and minute I had to my Avon Business. I grew my customer base slowly but surely and over time my customer base and sales consistently increased. I even started my leadership journey at the encouragement of Emily Seagren who was Leslie’s upline.
I studied and learned everything I could from Emily and through her’s and Leslie’s mentorship I am where I am today. In January of 2017 the opportunity to purchase Leslie’s Avon team was presented to me. Not one to pass up a great offer I took it! Emily Seagren is now my upline, my team has almost doubled and I am now a Gold Ambassador; Team Shine is thriving!
My goals for 2017 are to earn the title of “Gold Leader” and make “Honor Society” again in 2017. My long term goal is to retire and Avon continue to be my major source of income. I hope to accomplish this in the next 5 years.
