Memories of my Avon 39 Walk in Chicago Part II- The Walk
Today was the day; the day we would walk 26.2 miles. I had done my best to prepare for today; I had invested in good shoes at a size larger than normal as suggested. I purchased moisture wicking socks, a fanny pack, blister Band-Aids, Nuun electrolyte packets for my water, everything I could think of I might need.
We awoke at 4:00 AM to get ready and take the shuttle to opening ceremonies. We were both rather tired and a little worn out from out site-seeing escapades but were excited none the less.
We arrived at the Opening Ceremony, grabbed some coffee and breakfast and joined the crowd of about 1350 walkers. There were teams where they all dressed alike, individuals with crazy outfits, survivors, those who lost family members or friends and so many others with reasons for being there and walking that day. My reason? It was because I had lost a friend 7 years earlier to the disease, my aunt was a survivor, my friend carried the BRCA gene, her mom was a survivor and my cousin was currently fighting it. Sadly, 2 months before the walk, that cousin died. Today was very emotional for me to say the least.
We all counted off; 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, the horn sounded and we were off. We were all crowded together at first but as we got to the lake it started to thin out; the faster walkers ahead and the slower ones following behind. It was going to be a hot one today. Each mile was marked off and brought relief as it was one mile less left to walk. There was always someone at the major intersections to make sure we safely crossed and they were showing their Avon 39 spirit with pink hair and fun outfits.
It became obvious to me early on that I would not be able to keep up with Emily. With my approval and encouragement she ventured off by herself. I took it slow, utilizing the sweep vans (vans that would pick you up and take you to the next check-in location) when needed. I would wait for her at the next stop and walk as far as I could with her. At the lunch checkpoint I grabbed some food, put my feet up and waited for Emily. We had an interview with Avon about the walk while we were there; Here is mine. We then continued on and as the heat was becoming unbearable we found a pile of ice to cool off!
After about 12 miles I had to quit; my feet just hurt too bad. Every step felt like a thousand at this point. I took the bus to base camp and waited for Emily’s arrival. I was met with a very much appreciated pair of slippers and plopped my butt down in the grass to wait. Needless to say she completed the walk that day! I was so proud of her, I knew she could do it.
We were both exhausted so we immediately hopped on the shuttle to head back to the hotel. We had elected NOT to stay at base camp that night in tents as we knew we needed that soft, comfy bed! When we got to the hotel neither of us had the strength to go out to get dinner so we ordered room service. Bacon Cheeseburgers and Fries for $16. Were not sure how it happened but that dinner ended up costing us over $60! Haha, we didn’t care, we were HANGRY!! Emily soon realized she had some type of chemical like burns on her feet from her socks. (she didn’t wash before wearing them). The decision was made not to walk the following day; yes, her feet were hurting that bad.
I was shocked to find out that there were only about 20 Avon Representatives on the walk. Let this be an invitation to all of the Representatives out there to sign up for the next one! Together we raised 3.1 million that weekend! Some of the grants were actually handed out on the stage at the closing ceremony; such an immediate impact!
I had planned on staying at a hotel close to the airport that night but Emily invited me to stay at her house my last night. Heck yeah! Her home was beautiful and inviting! Rob picked us up lunch from Portillo’s; of course I had the Chicago dog! Later that night he BBQ’ed us up some steak, corn and potatoes and Emily made her famous salad. I have to say it was all VERY delicious! Emily and I did some strategizing and we even did a live video. The night ended and in the morning I would be heading home. It was an amazing trip that I will never forget! Emily and I developed an even stronger bond and for that I am thankful. I was sad to be leaving but happy to be going home to my husband Buddy and my dogs, Petey and Kitty.
We have decided to do the Avon 39 Chicago Walk again in 2018 and will be joined by other Avon Representatives this time. At least now I know what to expect and I know that my training is most important. I am determined more than ever to complete the walk next time.

About Avon Representative Shirl Papaian
Shirl was awarded on stage at the 2015 Avon PRP Gala Luncheon for the highest online sales in her district, for earning President’s Club Level and other various incentives.
In 2016 she advanced from Ambassador to Silver Ambassador and to Gold Ambassador through her consistent efforts to grow and mentor her team of Avon Representatives. She also became a DSWA Certified ELITE Leader and completed the Avon Pilot Coaching Program.
Shirl also earned almost $2,000 in Avon bonuses in the “Journey to Gold Incentive” and earned herself a Champion Blender by being #59 out of 400 Avon Ambassadors in the “Ignite Your Avon Torch” incentive. She also won all three awards in the “One Team, One Dream” incentive. Shirl’s 2016 team sales were more than $92,000. Her Team’s sales growth was 365%.
Shirl was awarded on stage at the Annual PC Gala Luncheon for 2016 for #1 in her District for Sales Growth, #4 in Sales Volume, #2 in online sales and earning Honor Society Level. She also was honored with the prestigious Spirit of Avon Award.
In 2017 Shirl earned Level 1 of the Sparkle Like a Boss incentive, $440 in the All Aboard Onboarding incentive. She also earned an Avon Speaker, Avon Notebook Set, 4 $50 Gift Cards, a $25 Gift Card, a 7-Piece Cookware Set, an Avon Water Bottle, Free registration for RepFest, an Avon Umbrella and a Luxury Wristlet in the Ticket to Boss Life incentive. My Avon Story
I am born and raised in Southern California. I grew up in Anaheim, CA, spent 13 years in mountains of Idyllwild and then eventually moved to the Hemet/San Jacinto Valley where I now reside. I began working at the age of 15 but I have actually only had a handful of jobs in my lifetime; Fast food manager, extruder operator, restaurant owner, fire fighter and now district manager for a private fire prevention company and media/ marketing for an off road racing company. I also own a home based computer service/repair company and an off road media/marketing company. I hold an AS degree in Fire Science from Mt San Jacinto College where I graduated with honors of distinction.
I decided to become an Avon Representative in 2014. My daughter had signed up and my sister-in-law as well. My sister-in-law joined for the discount on her own purchases and my daughter gave it up after a while; she found she didn’t have the time she wanted to devote to it while raising two toddlers.
I had always thought about becoming an Avon Rep, but it was always just a thought. I remember my mom buying Avon when I was very young and was always mesmerized at all the products and how the Avon lady always looked so beautiful and polished. Of course I loved the lipstick bullets!
My daughter’s upline and mutual friend, Leslie Reid, was always sharing Avon deals and the opportunity on Facebook. One day she posted about joining her team and becoming an Avon Rep; I just decided right then and there to do it. I had no plan or specific reason. As I started selling, I realized that I was actually having fun and felt accomplished at how well I was doing. I decided I wanted to get serious and actually be successful!
For the remainder of that first year I concentrated on learning as much as I could about the business; learning most everything on my own. Then in 2015 I devoted every extra dollar and minute I had to my Avon Business. I grew my customer base slowly but surely and over time my customer base and sales consistently increased. I even started my leadership journey at the encouragement of Emily Seagren who was Leslie’s upline.
I studied and learned everything I could from Emily and through her’s and Leslie’s mentorship I am where I am today. In January of 2017 the opportunity to purchase Leslie’s Avon team was presented to me. Not one to pass up a great offer I took it! Emily Seagren is now my upline, my team has almost doubled and I am now a Gold Ambassador; Team Shine is thriving!
My goals for 2017 are to earn the title of “Gold Leader” and make “Honor Society” again in 2017. My long term goal is to retire and Avon continue to be my major source of income. I hope to accomplish this in the next 5 years.
